I have a new obsession with castles. There’s something so charming and curious about them. I love how I’ve seen so many during my first few weeks in Spain. Every time I pass one, these questions cross my mind…
- Who built that?
- How long has it been there?
- How can I see it up close?
I just think they’re so cool…and I found a really cool one after googling the best castles near me. The top recommendation was the Peñíscola castle so I knew I had to see for myself whether or not it lives up to the Google search hype.
The castle towers over crashing aqua waves connected to a quaint beach town. Situated on a hill, the Peñíscola castle offers views of mountains, coastline, sprouts of green trees, jagged rocks and a glittering ocean.
Stone paths lined with shops and restaurants guided us up to the castle entrance. This means that stopping for food or drinks is a must as there are so many little spots with unbeatable views. It seemed like every side street on our way up to the castle offered something beautiful.
The castle itself is huge and definitely worth exploring all the way to the top. It had one of the best views in Spain that I’ve seen so far. After experiencing Peñíscola, I’m on a mission to find as many castles as I can in Spain.
